Types of terminals

Where you take the payment decides the terminal.

Countertop terminals

A built-in printer and a wired or Wi-Fi connection, for a counter that takes payments all day.

Smart terminals

A touchscreen terminal that takes tips and signatures on screen and can run simple apps for your business.

Wireless handhelds

Pay at the table, at the curb, or in the driveway, with cellular models for places without Wi-Fi.

PIN pads for your POS

A customer-facing pad that connects to your POS: the customer taps or inserts, and your system does the rest.

Mobile card readers

A small reader that pairs with a phone or tablet, for markets, job sites, and deliveries.

Tap to pay on a phone

Take contactless cards and phone wallets on a compatible phone, with no extra hardware.

Before you buy

A terminal that's cheap today can cost you later.

Terminal models get retired, and each model's card-security approval has a published expiry date. A model near the end of its life may need replacing soon after you buy it.

Before you buy any terminal, from us or anyone else, ask two questions: Is this model still sold? When does its card-security approval expire? We'll answer both before you buy.

Tell us your POS or software and the fee program you want, and we'll confirm the terminal handles both the right way before you buy, including telling debit from credit where the rules require it.

Already have terminals? Send us the make and model. Some can be set up for a new processor and some can't, and we'll tell you which yours are before you buy anything.

In writing, before you sign

  • The price to buy, and any rental or lease terms
  • Your card processing pricing, line by line
  • Any monthly fee tied to the equipment
  • Any term or cancellation fee

Ask about anything that isn't listed. Better now than on your first statement.

How it works

The right terminal, ready the day it arrives.

Step 1

A 15-minute call

Tell us where and how you take payments. We recommend the terminal that fits and say why.

Step 2

Everything in writing

The equipment price, processing pricing, and any term or cancellation fee, before you sign.

Step 3

Set up before it ships

In most setups, your terminal is programmed for your account before it ships, so you can take a payment the day it arrives.

Step 4

One rep who answers

You get a direct number. When something comes up, you call a person who already knows your account.

FAQ

Questions about terminals.

Should I buy, rent, or lease a terminal?
You'll see the price to buy, and any rental or lease terms, in writing. Before you sign any equipment lease, from anyone, ask whether it can be canceled and what it costs over the full term.
Will my current terminal work?
Some terminals can be set up for a new processor and some can't. Send us the make and model and we'll tell you before you buy anything.
Do your terminals take phone wallets?
The terminals we recommend take chip cards, contactless cards, and phone wallets. If a particular wallet matters to you, ask, and we'll confirm it for the exact model before you buy.
Can a terminal show a cash price and a card price?
Some can. If you want dual pricing, cash discounting, or surcharging, we check that the terminal handles it the right way before we recommend it. How fee programs work
Why don't you list brands and models?
Because the right terminal depends on where and how you take payments, and models change. On the call we name the one we recommend for you, and why.
